Truckman launches UK retrofit alarm for pickup hardtops
Truckman has launched what it reckons to be the UK’s first Thatcham certified alarm system for pickup load-bed covers.
The L4V Alarm, developed by aftermarket security specialist Locks4Vans, features a series of wireless infrared and movement sensors that can be fitted around the inside of the hardtop, in the truck bed and across the windows and rear door.
These are integrated into the vehicle’s electronics so, when triggered, they cause the main horn to blare and lights to flash.

The kit includes an anti-sabotage system that protects the alarm components from being disabled in an attack, and an anti-peel door sensor that guards the most common point of entry.
However, it’s only currently available for the new Ford Ranger, with owners able to register their mobile phone via the FordPass Pro app to receive a notification of an activated alarm.
Versions for Isuzu’s D-Max and the Toyota Hilux will be available soon, which will no doubt be welcomed by despairing owners suffering at the hands of rural crime.
According to the NFU, pickup thefts doubled last year, with the Hilux and Mitsubishi’s L200 the most frequently targeted. Figures for the Volkswagen Amarok were also up by more than 50% on 2021.
As Thatcham-approved alarms are considered the industry benchmark for vehicle security, buyers can potentially lower their insurance premiums by fitting one. That may go some way to offsetting the cost of the kit.
There are two fit-it-yourself packages available, the cheaper of which is priced at £445 (excluding VAT) and includes an alarm, siren and one movement sensor for the rear door.
Adding another couple of sensors increases the price to £575.
