Welsh sheep farmers offered £1m EID support

Welsh sheep farmers are being given the chance to earn £500 towards the cost of EID.

The money is being offered to the first 1,500 farmers who complete an online questionnaire, hosted by Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC).

HCC industry development manager Sion Aron Jones said the questionnaire aims to understand the barriers that prevent farmers using new technologies.

But only sheep farmers with more than 100 ewes will be eligible for the £500 voucher, which will be available to download upon completion of the questionnaire.

Providing a financial contribution may help reduce the cost barrier and get sheep farmers started before EID comes into force next year, added Mr Jones.

Rebecca Evans, deputy minister for food and farming, said: “Improving business performance and enhancing IT skills in farming is a priority for the Welsh government. I am particularly pleased this project has been developed in conjunction with people who are in the day-to-day business of farming.”

NFU Cymru deputy president John Davies added: “Given the volatility in lamb prices over the past 24 months and the particularly difficult trading conditions this summer, this announcement is a much-needed boost to the sheep sector.”
