Three Counties: Local breed secures supreme beef champion

It was a local breed that took the Three Counties Show beef supreme championship, with the 39 month old Hereford bull taking home the silverware. Tim Livesey’s homebred Normanton 1 Eastern Promise by  Normanton 1 Casa Nova and out of Normanton 1 Jews Ear won the interbreed championship at Staffordshire County Show earlier in the month and next heads to the Royal Highland Show in a couple of weeks.

In reserve was the seven  year old British Blonde cow with her January born calf at foot, Hackleton Vixen from Sam Brown at Hackleton Farms, Northants. Homebred, this one is by Brownhill Oswald and out of Hackleton Rosemary and was supreme champion at the same show last year. She heads to the Great Yorkshire Show next.

Judge Roger Everall said the general turnout was fantastic and had difficulty parting the Hereford and the Blonde. In the end he said it was the bull’s hind end that piped the cow to the post. “”The Hereford was an outstanding bull and the breed is starting to get back to where it wants to be.”
