Welsh Blacks top trade at 16,000gns

Welsh Black bulls realised a strong trade at the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s 61st Winter Show and Sale at Dolgellau last week (10 January), when bids reached 16,000gns for Llechwedd Rhys 47th.                

The April 2015-born home-bred bull, with Trefaes Twm 2nd bloodlines, was sold by William Hefin Evans, Eithin Fynydd, Talybont, Merioneth, and was knocked down to DG and B Thomas, Aberdyfnant, Llangadog, Carmarthen.

Next in the money at 9,000gns was the day’s reserve champion bull, the April 2015-born Tynygraig Sion, consigned by EW and M Jenkins, Tynygraig, Ceredigion, and sold to Messrs Jones, Talymignedd Isaf, Caernarfon.

Third-highest price of the day went to Caerynwch Sam, bred and sold by TW Williams and Co for 7,400gns to AL Jones, Brynllech Uchaf, Bala.

The champion bull tapped out by Rhys Francis, Llangadog, was Llechwedd TWM 35th.

Also sired by Trefaes Twm 2nd and from the same home as the top-priced lot, the June 2015-born bull was knocked down to IG and JD Roberts, Tryfil Isaf, Anglesey, for 6,500gns. 

Two bulls sold for 5,000gns. First was Ynysfor Meirion 6th, bred by Ken Ellis and Sons, which sold to Mr DD Morgan, Alltgoch, Aberystwyth.

Second was August 2015-born Deiniolen Major 6th, bred by Michael Wyn Jones and Son. It sold to EW and M Jenkins, Tynygraig, Aberystwyth.

Leading the female trade at 3,400gns was Penwernhir Nansi 12th, a maiden heifer organically bred by Doug Rowbotham, Ceredigion, and by Iwrch Limited Edition. She headed home with Huw Roberts, Gyrn, Bala. 

Averages: Females over three years, 877gns; two- to three-year-olds, 1,447gns; one- to two-year-olds, 983gns; females younger than one, 592gns; bulls older than 18 months, 5,119gns; bulls 12- to 18-month-olds, 3,600gns. (Farmers Marts, Dolgellau, Gwynedd)
