Strong dairy trade at Frome Market

Frome market sale goers witnessed 50% of the dairy entries reaching the £2,000 mark last week.

Premier Livestock Auctions reported strong demand throughout with a large complement of buyers in attendance creating an “amazing trade”. 

“Overall a quality entry was presented for sale and everyone was very keen to buy,” they said.

A run of eight calved heifers from W Green and Sons averaged £1,964 and four times in excess of £2,000 to achieve the top price at £2,080.

Well presented calved heifers from regular vendor A F Leighton also produced excellent prices at £2,050 and £2,010.  Quality “Design” sired heifers from W D Guley and Son sold easily to £1,980.  Demand for calved cows was superb with “Judo” sired cows again from A F Leighton to £2,060. 

An entry of second calved cows from James Churchill met excellent interest with his Friesian Holsteins to £2,000, £1,750 and Ayrshire to £1,530. 

In-calf heifers saw a very strong trade. Generally there were more commercial types on offer, but strong demand saw February/April calvers to £1,430.  Heifer calves sold a little easier at £140.
