Royal Lancashire Show hits the buffers

The Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society has admitted failure in its attempts to resurrect the Royal Lancashire Show in 2010.

Having cancelled the show for a variety of reasons due to rain in 2007 and 2008, the Society said in a statement on its website that it had accepted defeat in its attempts to create a 2010 Royal Lancs Show.

It lays the blame for the cancellation of next year’s show door of Ribble Valley Borough Council which refused to allow a proposed amendment to a previous traffic plan for the event.

The Society had a venue in place and, despite a rocky fincancial past had plans in place for an event in 2010. However, it had to amend its plans due to a local farmer ceasing to allow the Society access across his field to car parking areas adjacent to the showground. “This was despite the Society spending more than £30,000 in 2004 to make a road access across the field and paying an annual fee for the use of the road,” said a spokesman.

“Everything now looks bleak and it is very difficult to see any possibility of another Royal Lancashire Show being held at anytime in the foreseeable future, although it might be possible to hold much smaller events, but certainly outside the Ribble Valley.”
