Poultry charity launches British Hen Welfare Day to raise cash
© John Eveson/FLPA/imageBROKER/REX/Shutterstock A Devon-based poultry charity is holding the first British Hen Welfare Day to help it raise funds.
The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) in South Molton, re-homes laying hens and hopes the charity day on 23 September will become an annual event.
The charity has collection points across the UK and has re-homed 500,000 hens with the help of 450 volunteers.

The 2016’s day will also act as the launch of an appeal towards building a flagship re-homing unit that will double up as an education centre.
Planning permission has already been submitted and the total cost is expected to be about £200,000.
As a way of mobilising support, people are being asked to get involved by holding a “Free Range Friday” and inviting their friends and family to eat cake in exchange for a donation.
Charity founder, Jane Howorth, said: “This year has already seen the British Hen Welfare Trust achieve some truly wonderful things, from re-homing our 500,000th hen to carrying on making strides in improving the lives of commercial hens.
