NFU’s #BuyMyTurkey campaign urges support for local farmers

The public is being urged to back British farmers this Christmas by ensuring they buy local turkeys direct from the farm.

Many UK turkey producers have experienced another difficult year due to rising costs and ongoing problems caused by outbreaks of avian influenza that have led to culls on some farms.

The NFU says the best way families can show their support for British turkey farmers is by ordering from local producers.

On Friday 17 November, turkey producers across the country are taking to social media platforms to show the value of buying local through the NFU’s #BuyMyTurkey day.

As part of the campaign, the NFU is urging shoppers to use its online Turkey Finder to locate their nearest producer and buy a whole turkey direct from the farm where it was reared for their Christmas dinner.

More than 240 farms are listed on the Turkey Finder.

NFU turkey group chairman Jonathan Smith said: “By buying a British turkey directly from the farm where it has been produced, you will be backing British farming, helping a local business, and providing a boost for the rural economy.

“We know that everyone is being affected by the cost of living crisis, which is why we are encouraging shoppers to buy a whole bird, as it represents the best value for money.”

The NFU advises anyone buying a turkey from a local butcher to check if it has been reared on a British farm.

Meanwhile, it says those who plan to buy their turkey from a supermarket should look for the Red Tractor and the Union flag to ensure they are buying a turkey reared to the highest standards.

The NFU is urging turkey producers to share photos and videos to promote their farms on produce on social media using the hashtag #BuyMyTurkey.
