Farmers lose 55,000 birds in Northern Ireland flash floods

The birds, from 2 farms in County Tyrone, were killed in flash floods during the storm, which left a trail of destruction across the north west of the province.

Moy Park, one of Northern Ireland’s largest employers, said damage to buildings on the farms had also been reported.

It added that it was working closely with the farmers and relevant bodies to help get the family-run business fully up and running.

Staff from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs have been out on the ground to help local farmers respond to the flooding. Permanent Secretary Noel Lavery said many farmers had been badly hit by the flooding.

“We have had reports of livestock losses and damage to farmland and properties, with the Glenelly Valley and the North West particularly affected.
