Novel egg box based on cardboard offers green benefits

A novel egg box design is set to revolutionise the egg sector offering packers a greener alternative which is easily recycled.

Many are familiar with the plastic and moulded fibre egg cartons on supermarket shelves. But Hartwig Chamier von Gliszczynski, a German innovator in engineering and corrugated board conversion, believes he has come up with an alternative.

“There’s got to be a better way of packing eggs – safer and much easier to handle.”

So he developed his patented egg box, which is made of corrugated cardboard and is available in double-6 or 10-egg sizes.

Egg Box,the company that is now developing the new design, highlighted that the benefits of a cardboard design include excellent graphics which are visible from all sides and no requirement for labels and stickers.

“Since the patented egg box is completely flat all around, egg producers can – for the first time in history – print their message in clear offset colours on the complete surface – even on the inside,” said the company.

On top of this, it has a lower environmental footprint with easy recycling and ultimately is excellent at protecting eggs from damage during transport.

The firm is moving into a new production site in Wittenburg, near Hamburg, later this month and plans to double its capacity to six production lines by mid 2010, with the aim to have 20 running by 2012.
