Opico front-mounted slit aerator at AgriScot

A front-mounted sward slitter for aerating leys was launched at AgriScot this week (17 November).
The Opico Sward Slitter incorporates a bridge linkage which makes the front-mounted slitter steer like a trailed machine as it extends the front of the tractor and allows the slitter rotor to be pulled and follow the tractor.
Aeration of the sward root zone is critical for a healthy ley, explains Opico’s MD James Woolway. “The Sward Slitter allows oxygen interchange through the soil surface which improves the aeration of plant roots in the upper soil surface and stimulates grass and clover growth.
“Slitting also encourages evaporation of moisture in the surface layer of soil so it dries out quickly, promoting earlier growth in the spring.”
This product has the same features as the company’s rear-mounted unit incorporating a 3m working width, a weight of 685kg, and a total of 72 blades.
The chamfered rear edge of the blades limits turf damage when each knife comes out of the soil, so leaving a better finish.
The heavy-duty frame of the Sward Slitter is also designed with a weight-carrying rack so extra weights can be added to the machine in hard conditions.
“The Sward Slitter is designed for the removal of surface compaction and capping. For deeper compaction – greater than 12cm – a Sward Lifter should be used to break up the mineral pan and improve drainage,” adds Mr Woolway.
