Female record of 9,500gns hit at Solway and Tyne Texels
Borderway reported a top of 40,000gns and a new female club record at the Solway and Tyne Texel Breeders Club sale on Friday (1 September).
Strong demand lifted ram lamb averages £200 on the year, taking trade around £600 higher than 2015 levels, according to club secretary Fiona Sloan, who said the sale was now the number two sale for Texels in the UK.
“There is currently a four-year waiting list of breeders wanting to enter the club,” she told Farmers Weekly. “Averages were bolstered by one lot at 40,000gns and commercial trade was also strong.”

The Clarks topped trade with Gangour Alabama, knocking down in a six-way share for 40,000gns
Leading the sale was Gangour Alabama from J and H Clark, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, which was knocked down in a six-way share to Boden & Davies, Mellor Hall Farm, Mellor Stockport, B Vernon, MarstonBrook Farm, Marston Bank, Rocester, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, K Pratt, Oldtown Farm, Peterculter Aberdeenshire, Ben Baggott Farms, Higher Coley Far, Little Haywood, Stafford, R Evans, Fox Farm, Hope Valley, Minsterley, Shropshire.
He is by Knock Yardsman and out of a Mossvale Winston dam. Back pedigree includes a granddam that took Biggar Show interbreed champion and is a full sister to the 6,000gns Gangour Wall Street.
Northern Irish ram lamb Mullan Amigo made 32,000gns for Brian Hawthorn, County Armagh
Next at 32,000gns was judge Brian Hanthorn’s flock from Tynan, County Armagh, with Mullan Amigo, eventually knocked down in a three-way share between S Renwick, Peebles, Midlothian; Karen Wight, Midlock Farm, Bigger and R Cockburn, Errol, Perthshire.
He is out of a Eglur Viscount dam and by Mullan Wild Bill and comes from the same family as the 2,100gns Mullan Van Winkle and 1,500gns Mullan Wasabi.
Bruce Renwick saw a 20,000gns bid for a Strathbogie Your Tupped son from his Castlecairn flock
Bruce Renwick’s Castelcairn flock then made 20,000gns with a bid from Kenny Pratt, Peterculter, Aberdeenshire.
This lamb was by Strathbogie Your Tupped and out of a ewe by home-bred stock ram Castlecairn Presentation.
A Welsh consignment from James Ruggeri knocked down in a three-way Share to North-West breeders for 15,000gns
Next at 15,000gns was Gyrhos Andy, an Eden Valley Wiz Kid out of a Clinterty Ultra ewe, from Welsh breeder James Ruggeri, Llanfair, Welshpool.
This lamb was knocked down in a three-way share to Peter and Rose Woof, Stainton, Kendal; G and M Wilson and Sons, Appleby, and REJ Pierce, Pulford Chester.
Strong bidding and a steady commercial trade followed, seeing ram lambs to 12,000gns, 10,000gns three times and six more bids over the 5,000gns mark.
Female record
The Baltier flock of Robert Forsyth, Wigtown, dominated the female section, setting a new female club record of 9,500gns with a Garngour Upperclass daughter out of a Knock Powerpacker dam and also recording the second top price.

A winning bid for the record female was made by Messrs Alford, Blackborough, Cullompton, for the 335-index female.
A shearling gimmer from the same sire, this time by Baltier Rocksolid, knocked down at 5,000gns to Cheshire breeders Boden and Davies Ltd selling to A MacGregor, Kilsyth, Glasgow.
Shearlings hit 6,500gns
Shearling trade hit 6,500gns with a bid from JE and SJL James, Maesmynis, Builth Wells, for the day’s overall reserve champion Strathbogie Yamaha from Jim Innes and Sons, Huntly, Aberdeenshire.
