Electric cattle trade at Cutcombe Market

An entry of 200 cattle went under the hammer with an electric trade seeing all ages and breeds being sold to a racing trade at Exmoor Farmers Livestock Auction sale of store cattle, cows and Calves.

Grazing cows sold to an average of ÂŁ850 with a peak of ÂŁ1,000 for G G Warne and Son, Peregrine Farm. One hundred and seventy store cattle were forward with heifers selling to an average of ÂŁ209.02, a peak of 283p, being ÂŁ785 and a maximum of ÂŁ1,118 for Messrs M H Willes, Steart Farm who also took the top price in the steer section with a steer reaching ÂŁ1,145.

The steers averaged 227p/kilo, a peak of 268p/kg was achieved with the average a head standing at ÂŁ745. Heifers across the board sold to a superb trade with British Blues reaching ÂŁ1,020 for Messrs M H Willes. Charolais peaked, again for Mr Willes, at ÂŁ1,118.

Limousins sold to an average of ÂŁ875 and peaked at ÂŁ1,058 for Mr R J Nancekivell, Lower Swansea Farm. Simmentals were also well met with an average of ÂŁ675 and a peak for P J and J Webber, Steadway Farm selling at ÂŁ875. A small entry of Devons sold to a peak of ÂŁ790 for Mr C Harding, Buckethole Farm.

Within the steer section a Beef Shorthorn from Mr J Bryant sold for ÂŁ460, British Blues from Mr C Dapling reached ÂŁ480. Charolais peaked at ÂŁ1,145 for Mr M H Willes with an average across the board of ÂŁ875. Messrs M H Willes also sold others to ÂŁ1,105 with Messrs G H and A Walters, Holwill selling a pair to ÂŁ1,040 and Mr D J Vellacott reaching ÂŁ1,025 for another pair.

Limousins were also well received with the best reaching ÂŁ1,110 for Messrs S J and R J Webber, Dunkery View with a further animal reaching ÂŁ1,100 for Mr B Richardson, Fernham Farm, who also sold a second to ÂŁ950. Two Lincoln Reds for Mr K G Manning, Hunts Farm realised ÂŁ575 and ÂŁ550. Simmentals sold to average ÂŁ640 and peaked at ÂŁ990 for Messrs R and P Jemmison who also sold a second to ÂŁ865.

A quality run of breeding heifers forward sold strongly with Angus heifers selling to a peak of ÂŁ1,160 for Mr K Wade, Liscombe with others reaching ÂŁ1,030. Hereford X heifers from M and J Burnett, Bailiff’s Cottage sold to ÂŁ1,180 and ÂŁ1,020 with a Simmental X from P J and J Webber reaching ÂŁ800.
