Dairy Event 2011: Hornup dehorner

The Horn’up dehorning device for young calves won both the the Prince Philip award for the best-presented stand and the RABDF livestock machinery and equipment award.

Brought into the UK by Whitchurch firm Dairy Spares, it is a battery-powered unit that reaches 700 degrees C in one second. Dehorning then takes just seven seconds and doesn’t involve physical removal of the horn bud. Instead the blood vessels around the bud are cauterised, leaving the bud to die without having to be gouged out.

Up to 40 calves can be dehorned on one charge and the rechargeable battery should last for 15,000 calves, says the company. It costs £245.
