Border and Lakeland dairy sale hits annual high average
The Border and Lakeland Holstein Club’s June sale saw averages hit a year time high of over £2,100 for fresh and recently calved heifers and a dozen more made over £2,300.
The top price in the club consignment was for a second lactation cow from the Wilson family of Skirwith Hall. At 2,700gns the six week calved “Stowbeck Talent Brenda” sported the much-desired traits of longevity, popular sires, useful type and high butterfat and protein components in its pedigree. She now joins the herd of N and SJ Sanderson of Burtholme, Lanercost near Brampton. This young cow had earlier won the championship under Judge Heather Watson of the Gaterigg Herd.
Also up in the leading prices was the 2,500gns “Roansbank Galahad Mary” from Messrs Graves’ Ronansbank Herd. One month calved and, like the champion, she carried a solid homebred pedigree; the dam being an EX91 seven lactation cow by Comestar Outside.
Amongst the decent show of heifers was a 2,600gns early May calved daughter of the highly noted American sire Morningview Ashlar and out of a wonderful homebred 100 tonne EX92 cow from the Sue family. The grand dam was also a 100 tonne yielder.
It was not only local vendors that fared well in the sale ring. Amongst the milkers over £2,400 were heifers from regular consignors Messrs Struthers of Bankhead, Fife, Messrs Milne of Easter Coxton Farm, Elgin and Messrs Roan of Boreland of Colvend, Dalbeattie, as well as returning breeders from nearer the border Messrs Fleming of Hillhead, Lockerbie.
Following the collective sale was a milking portion dispersal of well bred stylish cows and heifers from Steven Blands “Cotegill” herd near Tebay. Sired mostly by very well bred stock sires, including sons from Holmland bred female lines and sons of Berryholme Storm Flo. The batch of 30 included two of the day’s highest prices. At £3,045 was Cotegill Pansy 26 VG86, by the Flo son, Berryholme Lemar. She sold fresh on her 3rd lactation.
At just over £2,500 was a daughter of the EX94 cow Cotegill Princess 16 sired by the Holmland Goldfinger.
