Trewint crowned best national South Devon herd again

The Rowe family’s Trewint herd, Cornwall, has won this year’s national South Devon herd competition.

It is the fourth time the Liskeard-based herd, owned and managed by Peter Rowe and his son Ashley, has won the accolade.

The herd was originally founded in 1947 by Peter’s father Stuart with just eight South Devon cows. Today it comprises 140 breeding females and five stock bulls.

The herd is a member of Breedplan and part of the SAC’s Premium Cattle Health Scheme.

Surplus females are sold for breeding alongside the top 10% of bull calves. The rest of bull beef is finished using home-grown cereals.

The judges praised the herd for its consistency, modern style and commercial objectives.
