Sheep prices continue to firm at Ashford market

Ashford market in Kent saw finished sheep prices continue to firm at its Tuesday (24 March) sale, with average prices up 10p/kg on the week.
Well-bred fleshed hoggets in the 38-45kg range were pick of the trade, with several pens achieving 200p/kg for the first time this season. “This is a trend which is likely to carry on over the coming weeks, although there will be a limit to how dear the hoggets can get depending on consumption levels and price resistance,” auctioneer: Elwyn Davies said.
An entry of new-season lambs from W Rogers & Son met an improved trade to average 218.99p and up to £79.50.
Cull ewes were described as having “never been so dear”, with top Texel ewes up to £119 and an overall average of £65.20.
Finished cattle trade remained competitive, with average steers (O+) averaging 145.50p/kg and O+ heifers 139.50p/kg.
