Beef Shorthorns top at 15,000gns at Stirling Bull Sales 2019

The junior and overall champion of the pre-sale show, Podehole Landmark took the leading bid of 15,000gns in the Beef Shorthorn ring at Stirling on Monday (4 February).

Bred and exhibited by H Horrell, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, the 22-month-old roan by Knockenjig Hercules, and out of a home-bred dam, caught the eye of breed newcomers, Gates Farming, Oakham, Leicestershire.

From the same breeder, the 23-month-old red Podehole Lincoln TI +30, SRI +25, another Hercules son, was awarded the senior championship and was knocked down to MG Bailey, Forfar, Angus, at 7,500gns.

Second in the money, at 13,000gns, was Leonard of Upsall TI +30, SRI +26, a 23-month-old roan, Dingo of Upsall son from Hon G Turton, Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

He sold to to DM Dickie, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire.

The same breeder had two further entries make 5,000gns and upwards.

At 8,000gns was Lawyer of Upsall TI +37, SRI +34, a 23-month-old roan within the breed’s top 1%.

Sired by Fearn Elmer, he went home with SS Horton and Sons, Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Then at 5,000gns was Longfellow of Upsall TI +24, SRI +21, a 21-month-old roan by Firefox of Upsall, which was knocked down to Lour Farms, Forfar, Angus.

The third top price of the day of 9,000gns was paid for Glenisla Lochan Dubh TI +29, SRI +27 from Major JPO Gibb, Blairgowrie, Perthshire.

Sired by Glenisla Jack Frost, the 22-month-old roan was secured by C Lowther, Penrith, Cumbria.

• Dunsyre Lancelot TI +21, SRI +18, a 22-month-old roan by Redhill Ferny from Carey Coombs, Carnwath, Lanarkshire, made 7,500gns when selling to RL Morris and Partners, Blairgowrie, Perthshire.
• Dunsyre Lanark TI +21, SRI +20, a 22-month-old roan Dunsyre Hamlet son from Carey Coombs, Carnwath, Lanarkshire, went for 5,000gns to the Scottish government’s bull stud.
• Chapelton Lancer TI +21, SRI +20, a 22-month-old roan by the 9,000gns Fergus of Upsall from DJ Biggar, Castle Douglas, Dumfriesshire, made 5,500gns when selling to P Dawes, Dinmore, Herefordshire.
• Mullaglass Lexus TI +22, SRI +14, a 22-month-old roan Dunsyre Esquire son from R Henning, Newry, County Down, sold for 5,200gns from to A Morton, Denny, Stirlingshire.
• Lagas Larry TI +27, SRI +26, a 22-month-old red and white by the 5,500gns Chapelton Adonis, from Laga Farms, Evie, Orkney, sold for 5,000gns to WG and H Murray, Golspie, Sutherland.

Females

A 22-month-old, in-calf roan heifer led the female trade at 6,000gns.

Chapelton Gem TI +28, SRI +24, from DJ Biggar, is a daughter of the 9,000gns Fergus of Upsall.

She sold to Thomas Staunton, Kinvara, County Galway.

The champion female, Glenisla Foxglove Flake L295 TI +29, SRI +23, was next in the money at 4,000gns.

The 22-month-old, in calf roan heifer by the 7,500gns Chapelton Glen Clova was bred and exhibited by JPO Gibb, and went home with A Shaw, Dungannon, County Tyrone.

From the same breeder, the 23-month-old, in-calf white heifer Glenisla Foxglove Flake L242 TI +26, SRI +27 made 3,200gns, secured by J Dodge, Cunningburgh, Shetland.

The reserve female champion Mountbenger Lorna TI +17, SRI +14 was knocked down for 3,000gns to Mark Runciman and Partners, Lauder, Berwickshire.

The 23-month-old, in-calf roan heifer by Mountbenger Jake was from JF Irving and Son, Yarrow, Selkirkshire.
