Automatic heat detection for loose housed sows

A new stand-alone heat-detection system for loose-housed sows launched at the Pig and Poultry Fair 2012 means sows returning to heat can be spotted early, significantly reducing the number of missed heats and sow empty days.

The Nedap Velos control system from Jenisys (contracts) works by fitting sows with electronic tags, and the time she spends “talking” to the boar through the heat detection station is monitored by the software. Once a pre-set number of visits are reached, the system generates an attention and the sown is immediately sprayed with a water-soluble dye to make her easy to find in the yard.

The system works through an internet-based network, so heat detections and other information can be accessed around the farm with any PC, smart phone or tablet.
