Aberdeen Angus bulls make 9,000gns at Borderway mart
Aberdeen Angus cattle led trade with a bid of 9,000gns at Borderway mart’s pedigree beef day last week (23 May).
The day’s top price was paid for the July 2012-born bull Eilean Explosion M029 from Alastair McSporran, Innerleithen, Peebleshire. Sired by Flodden Warden E316 he is out of the Netherton Figo daughter Eilean Enya G104. He was purchased by the McCosh Brothers, Biggar, Lanarkshire.
Next best and topping female trade when selling for 8,000gns to M Fraser, Templepatrick, Co Antrim, was the two-year-old heifer Rawburn Ebony M510, from John Elliot, Kelso, Roxburghshire. Sired by Rawburn Elmer J921 she is out of a homebred dam. She sold due in calf to Skaill Eddie in October.
Back with the bulls and achieving a final bid of 6,000gns was Newcastle-based father and son Alan and Steven Lawson with their April 2012-born Hallington Powerline M359. Sired by Hallington Jay Eric K264 he is out of Blelack Princess C779. They buyer was Schivas Estates, Ellon, Aberdeenshire.
Just shy of this at 5,500gns was the second prizewinner Halbeath Kiwi M468 from R and N Orr, Dunfermline. He is the first bull to be sold by Duncanziemere Edwin J311 and out of Halbeath Kerry K399, an Idvies Elmonarch F289 daughter, Purchaser was WA Osborne, Gorebridge, Midlothian.
Donald Graham, from Waterbuck, Lockerbie, made 5,200gns when selling their March 2012-born bull Carruthers Paramount M281 to C Gurney, Foscott, Buckingham. Sired by the £30,000 Rawburn Enigma he is out of the Galcantray Buddy daughter Carruthers Patsy A064.
Three lots made 5,000gns. The first of which was Gretnahouse Eli M585 from Alasdair Houston. Having stood third in the judging this one is a sire of the top Australian performance sire Ardrossan Admiral and is out of Blelack Eliza K432, a Blelack Kanasta Lad G191 daughter. He carries a TSI of +51, SRI of +62 with +14 for milk and an eye muscle area of +6.6 and sold to J I Rogerson, Morpeth, Northumberland.
At the same money was the junior and reserve overall champion Westhills Vincent M563 from Rachel Smith. By Cubbyhill Jasnic Eric H227, he is out of the Lady Croft Venice F351 sired Lady Croft Violet K817 and heads to Cumbria with J Sharpe and Son.
Last at this figure was Gini Guttery of Oak Moor Angus who sold the Blelack Duke J262 son Oak Moor Jury Eric M152. This one’s dam is the Blelack Kanasta Lad G191 daughter Blelack Jury Erica K442. He has a TSI of +49 and SRI of +62 with an eye muscle area of +4.7 and sold to AR bell, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Averages: 45 bulls, £3,862.83; one cow in calf, £2,100; two served heifers, £6,037.50; two maiden heifers, £2,100.
