NFU begins search for new young farmer ambassadors

The NFU is on the hunt for young people passionate about agriculture across England and Wales who are looking to make their mark on the industry.

Applications opened online for the union’s Student and Young Farmer Ambassador Programme – which is now in its fourth year – on 31 August.

The year-long programme gives successful applicants the opportunity to be ambassadors for British agriculture and represent their industry at key agricultural and political events, promoting the value of British food and farming to the nation.

The programme runs alongside the Next Generation Forum, Poultry Industry Programme, Cereals Development Programme and the Sugar Industry Programme as part of the NFU’s work to support the next generation of farmers.

To be eligible to apply, you must be an NFU student and young farmer member (it is free to join), aged between 18 and 26 and living in England and Wales.

In addition, you must have a vested interest in the future of farming and rural affairs, be committed to promoting the values of inclusivity and kindness in the industry, and have an interest in speaking to the media and writing in NFU publications.

NFU president Minette Batters said: “The Student and Young Farmer Ambassadors are really important to the work of the NFU, helping to represent the voice and views of young farmers and highlighting the work that needs to be done to secure their future and the future of the industry.

“I’m incredibly proud of the programme’s commitment to inclusivity, and I am committed to ensuring this remains an integral part of our ambassador programme.

“Diversity and inclusion are absolutely critical for any successful industry and we want to hear from anyone who feels passionately about agriculture and wants to champion the future of farming.”

Praise from cohorts

Ambassadors from the latest cohort have praised the programme and urged other young farmers to get involved.

East Midlands representative Jess Langton said: “It has enabled me to make many connections and given me opportunities I wouldn’t have had any other way.

“Being part of a diverse group of ambassadors has meant we’ve all bought something different to the group and continue to learn from each other.”

Young farmer and South West representative Zoe Legg added: “I would say the biggest thing the programme has given me is confidence.

“I feel like it has given me a valid voice within the industry and encouraged me to share my views and opinions on elements of the agricultural industry that will affect my future.”
