Five minutes with…Erin Wright, degree apprentice

Erin Wright is 18 years old and forging her path in the farming industry, working as a degree apprentice with Morrisons at one of its abattoir and meat production sites.

Based in Lancashire, Erin has deep roots in agriculture, growing up on her dad’s established beef and sheep farm.

Her passion for farming led her to study agriculture at Askham Bryan College, where she developed a strong foundation in the field.

Through hard work and determination, she secured a degree apprenticeship that allowed her to work in the meat industry while gaining qualifications in business and management.

Erin has always felt a strong connection to farming, drawn to its rewarding and variable nature. “I find there are different challenges each year,” she says.

“It’s satisfying to be able to provide a quality end-product to a consumer, knowing that the livestock has had the best chance to thrive.”

Future planning

Looking to the future, Erin envisages a successful career within the meat industry, “as I have a passion for putting food on people’s plates,” while also maintaining a presence on her home farm.

“I am keen to promote British produce and hope to see the productive land we farm provide for future generations,” she says.

In her free time, Erin is actively involved in her local Young Farmers Club in Samlesbury, where she enjoys competing and has served as programme secretary as well as the current vice-secretary.

Stock judging is a particular passion, and she has represented her club at northern area and national finals across the country where she had recent success.

“It’s a great way to engage with others who share the same interests.”

When it comes to inspiration, Erin admires those in the industry who are adaptable.

“I look up to people who keep driving forward and aren’t afraid to face challenges,” she says.
