Scottish farmer ploughs through gas main

Engineers hope to restore gas supplies to thousands of homes in Scotland after a farmer cut through a pipeline.

Some 3,500 homes were left without gas near Fishcross, Clackmannanshire, when a farmer carrying out drainage work damaged an 8-inch gas main.

Engineers worked into the night to repair the damaged section of the gas pipe.

A permanent repair to the damaged section of pipeline was completed at 1am on Wednesday (28 November).

By the end of the night, engineers from Scotia Gas Networks had managed to visit 1,700 homes in the Tillicoultry and Dollar area to turn off their gas supply.

Engineers are out again this morning to visit the remaining properties.

Each affected property must be visited to ensure that all gas systems have been shut down before beginning to restore supplies.

“Unfortunately it is too early to say when supplies will be restored, but this is likely to take a few days,” said the Scotia Gas Networks website.
