Photo of the week: Tipperary heifers

This week’s photo combines two of Aviril Bourke’s interests – farming and music, as she poses with her guitar and Angus heifers that are just over a year old.

Aviril is 14 years old and helps out on a farm every evening after school. Her interest in farming began after her granny Nora decided to give up her farm after Aviril’s grandfather passed away.

However, neighbour Johnny took this farm up and Aviril was able to maintain a connection to the farm.

She explains: “I always had an interest in farming and wanted to be able to farm so I used to go up to the farm beside my house where my grandad started and feed cattle grass through the gate.

“I then started milking cows with Johnny and feeding the calves milk by myself, putting in bags of meal, cutting plastic off bales before it goes into the feeder, topping fields, patching bales.

“Himself and his wife treat me as if I’m their own granddaughter and I couldn’t thank them enough for what they do outside of farming and, of course, on the farm.”
