Photo of the Week: Lightning strikes over barley harvest

Much of the country was affected by epic lightning and thunderstorms followed by monsoon-style downpours last week.

Johnathon Day managed to snap this impressive fork of lightning over the family farm, Grickstone Farm in the Cotswolds, during spring barley harvest, as they raced, unsuccessfully, to get the last block cut before the rain.

Johnathon says: “We’d seen the sky clouding up and for the last half an hour before the rain, we were given a very impressive lightning show up to 30 miles away over Chippenham and looking out to the edges of the Salisbury Plain”.

Johnathon says the farm’s harvest this year was probably very similar to most, with some nice surprises, but also some yields being predictably poor.

“Harvest itself has been steady, broken up with frustrating bits of rain – a classic British harvest story really!”
