Photo of the Week: Beacon of hope illuminates Highlands

This week, our Photo of the Week features Scottish hill farmers joining others across the country in lighting beacons to illuminate hilltops and fields as a visible symbol of opposition to controversial government policies.

Cathy Slimon, who submitted the photo, told Farmers Weekly: “We have a hill farm between Laggan and Dalwhinnie in the Scottish highlands.

“My husband is the fourth generation of farmers, and we have two sons who are also keen on the farm.

“We lit a beacon as we are very angry about the new inheritance tax that the Labour government is bringing in.”

The “Beacons of Hope” protest sent a clear message to the Labour government that farming families are determined to fight for their future and that of the next generation.

The proposed tax, set to be introduced in April 2026, could force many family farms to sell off land or assets to cover inheritance tax bills, threatening the long-term viability of the industry.
