New website to track sow stall ban
BPEX has launched a new website allowing the pig industry to keep track on the sow stall situation in Europe.
A partial banning of sow stalls will come in to effect from January 2013 across Europe but only 15 member states are expected to fully comply.
The new website www.countdownto1-1-13.co.uk contains up to date information regarding the level of compliance, impacts on the market and the estimated impact on the UK pig sector.
Commenting on the websites’ launch at the Pig and Poultry Fair, BPEX chief executive Mick Sloyan said: “We have already seen the impact the cage ban had on the poultry sector with some dramatic change with tightening supply. The impact on the pig market won’t be quite so dramatic, but we possibly will see a reduction in production across the EU of 5-10%.
“The website is designed to gather public support and commit to give consumers what they want-product that is produced in legal systems,” he said.
