Missing heats can cost a dairy farmer about £100 a cycle in lost production, so good heat detection is essential. However, farmers and their staff are often too busy to be able to spend much time checking when cows are in heat.
There are plenty of systems on the market that involve attaching a tag to a cow’s leg or neck, but these can only send the information over a relatively short distance.
