Welsh red meat levy rates set to increase in April

Hybu Cig Cymru (Meat Promotion Wales) has announced it will increase its levy rates for the first time since 2011, following a consultation last autumn.

From 1 April 2023, the rates will increase in line with inflation, which means farmers will pay an extra 6p for sheep, taking it to 69p an animal.

The levy on cattle will increase by 40p to total £4.74 a head.

Payments by producers will account for about 76% of the total new levy for sheep and cattle, with processors paying the remaining 23%.

Pig producers will pay £1.15 a head from 1 April and calf rearers will be charged 9p for calves under 68kg.
