The end of season sale of suckled calves and younger store cattle attracted a large variation in size and breeds last Wednesday (5 December). “There was a large attendance of local farmers wishing to top up their number of cattle, resulting in strong competitive bidding,” said Rendell’s auctioneer Peter Farnsworth.

Young South Devon steers sold to ÂŁ985, with Aberdeen Angus steers peaking at ÂŁ1,000 apiece. Suckled calves topped at ÂŁ640 for South Devon steers, with Friesians at ÂŁ130 and Charolais crossbreds ÂŁ425-ÂŁ500. Charolais heifers fetched ÂŁ360-ÂŁ462, with South Devons ranging from ÂŁ470 to ÂŁ690.

Prime South Devon bulls sold from 169p/kg to 175p/kg, with Limousin heifers at 160p/kg. Limousin cull cows topped at 145p/kg, with South Devons at 80-134p/kg.
