Recruitment begins for new tenant commissioner role

Defra has launched its recruitment campaign for the first commissioner for the tenant farming sector, aimed at improving tenant farming practices in England.

The new role will focus on promoting behaviours aligned with the Agricultural Landlord and Tenant Code of Practice, ensuring fairness, transparency and good practice within the sector.

The commissioner will be tasked with fostering constructive relationships between landlords and tenants, offering guidance and helping resolve disputes.

The Tenant Farmers Association (TFA) expressed its support, with chief executive George Dunn calling the role a vital appointment.

“This will highlight the importance of the tenanted sector of agriculture and ensure the Code of Practice is followed,” said Mr Dunn.

The TFA also believes the commissioner should address formal dispute resolution procedures, particularly arbitration, which has become costly and complicated.

“If the commissioner could look at reforms in arbitration, it would be really helpful,” Mr Dunn added.

The NFU says the new commissioner must remain independent and unbiased. The union has also stressed the importance of clear guidelines regarding the commissioner’s involvement in disputes.
