Support scheme deadline approaching for Scots sheep farmers

Hill farmers and crofters in Scotland have less than two weeks left to apply for the Scottish Upland Sheep Support Scheme (SUSSS).

Online applications must be in before midnight on Saturday 30 November. Paper applications received in the post at Scottish Government Rural Payments and Inspections Directorate area offices on Monday 2 December will be accepted, provided the envelope is postmarked 29 November or earlier.

The scheme opened for applications on Saturday 1 September, but so far, just over 60% of expected applications have been received, leaving about 500 yet to be submitted.

Payments for ewe hoggs through SUSSS deliver vital support for many hill farming and crofting businesses.

John Armour, NFU Scotland livestock policy manager, said: “At busy times of the year, scheme deadlines can often slip the mind.

“Given the importance of this funding stream to hill farmers and crofters, we urge all those who are eligible to crack on with their applications.”
