Grants for low-carbon heat pumps in England and Wales
A scheme offering grants of up to £6,000 to offset the cost of installing a low-carbon heat pump is open for applications.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is open to homeowners, including private landlords, with domestic and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales.
Grants are only available for air-source and ground-source heat pumps, and biomass boilers.

Hybrid heat pump systems – for example, a combination of a gas boiler and air source heat pump – would not be eligible.
The funding on offer is:
- £5,000 off the cost and installation of an air-source heat pump
- £5,000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler
- £6,000 off the cost and installation of a ground-source heat pump.
The system must be installed by an accredited installer, registered with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, who claims the grant on behalf of the property owner.
The value of the grant will be discounted off the price the homeowner pays.
Grants will be offered at a flat rate and will not vary by capacity of the installation, which must not exceed 45kWth.
To be eligible for the BUS, properties will also be required to have a valid energy performance certificate with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation, unless the property is exempt
A funding pot of £450m has been made available for the scheme, which runs from 2022 to 2025.
