Devon farmers to get £500,000 pot to promote agri-tech

Devon farmers are to benefit from £500,000 of funding that will be used to promote the use of new technologies that will enhance productivity and reduce the carbon footprint of the county’s agricultural sector.

Devon County Council has set up a pilot scheme called the Devon Agri-Tech Accelerator (Data), which will provide support and research for farmers and agri-tech business to develop innovations that will help build a more sustainable industry.

The funding has been secured through the UK Community Renewal Fund.

The project will start with research and mapping to understand how many farms currently use technology, what opportunities may be around the corner and what agri-tech developers there are within Devon.

It will then create an agri-tech alliance to enable farmers to connect with developers and other stakeholders, such as academic institutions, who are undertaking research.

A knowledge exchange manager will work with 14 agri-tech businesses across Devon to identify bespoke support, advice or services needed to develop agricultural technology and innovation, or grow farm businesses.

Vouchers of up to £15,000 will be available to pay for the support identified.

A farm innovation plan will also be rolled out to promote events where agri-tech businesses can showcase their innovations so farmers can explore the technology, try it out and understand what it could offer their farm business.

The event will be targeted specifically at farmers in west Devon and Torridge, which are the Community Renewal Fund priority areas in Devon.

The first event will be held on 28 February from 12-7pm at Roadford Lake Venue, Broadwoodwidger.

Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Devon County Council cabinet member for economic recovery and skills, said a flourishing farming industry was vital for rural communities, and underpinned the region’s food and drink sector, which was so important for the local economy.

“Through research and support, this project is aiming to ensure that agriculture in Devon can benefit from the use of technology, with farming and agri-tech communities working closely together.

“We’re looking for farm businesses, specifically in west Devon and Torridge, to take part in the farm innovation pilot of the project to help gain an insight into enhancing productivity and overall sustainability in those areas.”
