Leasing your land for energy storage: How can you get started?

Centrica Business Solutions is developing, building, managing, and optimising the energy infrastructure that’s going to enable the UK to transition to a low-carbon future
Centrica Business Solutions has been committed to supporting individuals, communities and businesses throughout the evolution of energy for over 200 years.
We know our role in shaping a net zero future for the UK is pivotal, with that in mind we’re building a 900MW portfolio of energy assets by 2026, including energy storage.
But what do you need to know to lease your land for energy storage? Bill Rees, Director of Centrica Energy Assets, shares how you can get long-term, stable rent for your land, while supporting the UK’s transition to net zero.
What’s involved in leasing your land for energy storage?
Energy storage assets can be built on just 2-3 acres of land, so they’re ideal for landowners who aren’t interested in releasing as much land as is required for a solar farm.
Energy storage should not be built somewhere that’s very productive for arable farming. Land that’s grade 3b or poorer is ideal – they’re an ideal choice for former industrial sites, or areas where there is already hardstanding.
The land should be near a grid connection with a minimum of 33kV grid connection, being near a substation is a bonus but not essential. If you’re not sure we can do all the checks to find out about suitability.
Taking a responsible approach
A big concern for landowners is whether there will be disruption to the location community, and they do lend themselves to being located away from residential areas. Regardless, we will work closely with the local community to reduce impact.
In terms of noise pollution, there are local noise regulations that all energy storage assets must adhere to. We ensure all our sites are fully compliant with these measures, this might mean installing methods of noise reduction.
Battery storage assets generally come in standardised containers and there’s plenty that we can do to minimise the visual impact – from installing fencing, to locating them near to established hedging.
We also look for ways to improve the biodiversity of the land where possible.
Partnering with us
The investments in energy assets will support the grid in moving towards an intermittent renewable energy generation, we want to speak to landowners to work out whether a renewable energy development on your land is likely to be successful.
