Huge spike in retail lamb sales at supermarkets

Supermarket chain Waitrose has seen sales of some British lamb products more than treble at its stores compared to the same time last year.

Demand for British lamb at retail has been so high that Waitrose buyers have had to purchase additional stock.

Overall, retail lamb sales were up by a third (34%) in the past week at Waitrose stores, compared to the previous year.

Waitrose lamb buyer Jake Tilling said: “We have seen a huge spike in demand for lamb, so much so that we’ve had to rely on our farmers to provide us with more stock to ensure we get the products our customers want for Easter.

“We are only able to do this because we back British farmers we know and trust, and have done for decades.

“The public not only expects supermarkets to deliver good value and high standards, they also expect supermarkets to back British farmers during difficult times.”
