Farm manager pay and conditions survey launched

The organisers of a biennial farm manager survey have called for more women to take part to help form a broader picture of pay and conditions.

The farm managers’ salaries and jobs survey is conducted by the Institute of Agricultural Management (IAgrM) with statistical support from Reading University.

IAgrM director Richard Cooksley said the survey had become hugely significant to employers and farm managers.

“The resultant report is universally accepted as a barometer of how the industry rewards its farm managers,” Mr Cooksley said.

“Its aim is to provide members and others who are interested, including employers, with objective and up-to-date information about pay and employment conditions,” Mr Cooksley explained.

And he urged as many managers as possible to take part to ensure the results were an accurate reflection of the current situation.

Pay gap

The first survey was carried out in 1970 and Mr Cooksley said some years had been completed solely by men.

“That has changed and we now have a number of women managers taking part.

“However, we would urge more women to get involved so that we can assess whether there are any pay gaps occurring in our industry according to gender,” he said.

The previous survey in 2016 showed that the average manager salary was £52,238 which represented a decrease of £892 or -1.68% on the survey carried out two years’ earlier.

Mr Cooksley stressed the survey was anonymous and completely confidential.
