Farmer views sought on UK farm assurance schemes

Grassroots farmers are being urged to share their views on the UK’s various farm assurance schemes, to feed into the independent review being undertaken in the wake of last year’s turmoil surrounding Red Tractor.
The review was commissioned by the farming unions and AHDB, and a simple survey has been set up to collate industry views.

Dr David Llewellyn, former principal of Harper Adams University, who is leading the review, said: “The project is focused on repurposing UK farm assurance for a post-Brexit world, and the commissioners are very keen to engage with as many farmers as possible in this process.
“This is your chance to tell us your experiences of farm assurance, so that we hear directly from the farming community.”
Topics covered by the review include:
- How farm assurance can deliver value to scheme members
- How standards are developed to meet the evolving needs of members and markets
- How assurance members are engaged with and inspected
- How technology is used in assurance now and in the future
- How assurance schemes fit with regulations.
The survey, which is anonymous and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, will remain open until 31 August.
Will Jackson, divisional director of engagement at AHDB, is asking farmers to share the link as widely as possible “because the more people that take part, the better, wider evidence base the commission have to work from”.
The commission’s full report, with recommendations, is expected at the end of this year.
