Ex-rock star killed in freak harvest accident

Farmers are being urged to take care after separate harvest accidents left a former rock star dead and two others injured.

A runaway hay bale is being blamed for the death of 62-year-old musician Mike Edwards.

Mr Edwards, former cellist with the band ELO, was killed when the 600kg bale rolled down a slope, over a hedge and on to the roof of his van.

It is understood that Mr Edwards’ van then collided with an oncoming vehicle.

The freak accident happened on Friday (3 September) on the A381 near Halwell, Totnes, Devon.

A police spokesman said: “Two white vans were involved in the collision and sadly one man died at the scene.”

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two motorcyclists crashed after skidding on grain spilled on a rural road in Lincolnshire.

Police are appealing for information about two separate accidents that occurred outside Woodhall Spa last week.

It is believed that a vehicle shed its load of grain on the last bend of Stixwould Road from Woodhall Spa to Stixwould.

A short time later, two motorcyclists were involved in separate collisions on the bend after apparently skidding on the grain.

A 24-year-old man from Lincoln and a 52-year-old woman from Bardney were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.
