Transform your farm: Embrace woodland creation for a greener future
Provided by
Tilhill Forestry offers farmers a professional one-stop service for selling woodland generated carbon units, woodland creation, management, and timber harvesting. We help farmers get even better value from otherwise less productive land.
A forward-thinking farmer has successfully designed and planted a new woodland with the help of Tilhill Forestry, member of BSW Group, securing the funding needed through the England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) grant.
This initiative aims to diversify farmland by integrating mixed broadleaf tree species, thus enhancing the existing farm business and supporting the farm’s core cattle business.

The farmer’s vision and objectives
The farmer’s primary goal is to diversify their family-run farm by incorporating woodlands.
This strategic move is intended to create a more flexible and resilient agricultural enterprise, and their long-term vision includes providing recreational spaces for the local community, offering significant mental and physical health benefits associated with woodlands.
On his plans for the farm, the landowner Jo Nicholson said: “We decided to plant new woodland on the farm for the environmental benefits, and for the shelter in increasingly windy times.
“We also have long term plans for the estate that could include diversifying the woodlands. This could provide my children with many opportunities if they want to stay living and working on the farm.”
Key components of the woodland
- Sweet Chestnut Plantations: The project has seen the planting of over 1,700 Sweet Chestnut trees, a species well-suited to Britain’s climate. These trees, capable of living up to 700 years, are ideal for coppicing and produce edible nuts, which have historically been a vital food source for both humans and livestock.
- Native Woody Shrubs: Over 2,800 native woody shrubs, including spindle and guelder rose, have been incorporated for their aesthetic appeal and ecological value.
Protective measures and establishment
To protect these young plants from the significant population of Muntjac, Roe, and Fallow deer, the team combined deer and rabbit fencing, along with easy wraps.
This method not only reduces costs but also minimizes the use of plastic. A low vigour grass mix with 4% clover was sown to suppress weed growth and promote the healthy establishment of the trees.
Community and environmental benefits
- Recreational and Health Opportunities: The woodland, spanning 5 hectares, is intended to offer permissive access to the local community once the trees are established. This aspect aligns with the farmer’s commitment to community well-being, with the woodland will offer opportunities for physical exercise.
- Environmental Enhancements: The site includes two ponds, where native trees have been planted along the water course to provide shade, reduce flooding, and create habitats for aquatic wildlife. Trees also play a crucial role in filtering pollutants through their root systems, thereby improving water quality. As they grow, trees sequester carbon dioxide, mitigating climate change.
Future-proofing the farm
The diversity of tree species enhances the woodland’s resilience against climate change, reducing the risk of pests and diseases. A comprehensive forest management plan, provided by Tilhill Forestry, ensures the woodland can adapt and grow sustainably.
According to the Woodland Carbon Code, this woodland is expected to capture 6,900 tonnes of CO2e over the next 100 years—the equivalent of emissions from driving 17,250,000 in a petrol car.
Carbon credits and financial incentives
CarbonStore has supported the farmer throughout the carbon transaction process. By collaborating closely, they ensured the project met the necessary validation criteria set by the Woodland Carbon Code.
This initiative has generated carbon credits, which the farmer can sell to companies eager to support UK woodland creation.
On working with Tilhill Forestry, Jo said: “The team have taken all the hard work out of the project from filling out the forms, liaising with the forestry commission, applying for grants, planning the woodland, organising the procurement of plants, stakes and guards to the planting and maintenance.
“The entire process was clearly explained to me, and I have been kept up to date with any developments. I have been very well advised and am incredibly happy with the results.”
By integrating woodlands into your farmland, you are not only enhancing your farm’s sustainability but also contributing to a healthier environment and community.
