UK milk production climbs back to three year average

UK milk production continues to climb above last year’s levels, averaging 37.4m litres/day in the two weeks to 13 July. That was 1.6% above last year, and virtually matched the three-year average – putting output on target to exceed the previous year’s monthly production for the first time since June 2012.

EU milk prices are starting to respond to the strength in commodity markets, after remaining flat for the previous six months. A DairyCo report said prices in some major producing countries rose between April and May, although the EU-27 weighted average price fell by 0.1%, to €34.26/100kg (29.92p/litre). That was 9.8% higher than the same time last year.

The average UK farmgate price stood at €34.15/100kg (29.82p/litre) in May, which put us 13th in the EU-27 league table. Cyprus topped the table at €56.80 (49.6p/litre), with the Netherlands at €39.5 (34.49p) and Ireland at €36.22 (31.63p/litre).

In the top-five milk producing countries (Germany, France, UK, Netherlands and Italy), the average May price was €35.38/100kg (30.88p/litre), which was 0.5% up on the previous month.
