Royal Welsh: Union plea for help to combat TB

The Welsh government is again being urged to reconsider its policy on badger culling amid escalating bovine TB cases in Wales.

The pressure for a policy change is being applied at the Royal Welsh Show where many farmers have been excluded from exhibiting because their herds are subject to TB movement restrictions.

Latest figures show that more than 2,500 cattle have been slaughtered in the first four months of this year.

Ed Bailey, president of NFU Cymru, said losing cattle in the prime of their productive lives represented one of the biggest impacts on efficiency in Welsh farming.

“The resilience of farmers and their families is so sorely tested by this horrendous disease,” said Mr Bailey, speaking at the show.

He urged the Welsh government to back Welsh farmers with a comprehensive TB eradication programme.
