Livestock 2013: Antibiotic test set to cut milk contamination

An on-farm antibiotic test, which reduces the risk of milk contamination, is now available through UK distributor Promar.

BetaStarCombo rapidly detects Beta-lactam and Tetracycline residues in milk.

Beta-lactam and Tetracycline account for 95% of antibiotics used on dairy farms. UK failure rate is about 20 farms a day.

Residues are interpreted against EU Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) and results are available within five minutes.

The testing equipment costs £90, and testing sticks are priced at £4 each.
