Growers in line for sugar beet levy refund

Thousands of sugar beet growers could be in line for a levy refund after a court ruled they had overpaid for a number of seasons.

British Sugar is writing to 6,500 growers to inform that if they grew beet under contract during the years 2001-2005 they are likely to get a payment.

A European Court ruling found there was an overpayment of levies to the European Commission.

British Sugar has recovered £13.4m from the commission and is in the process of tracing growers who are owed a share of this money.

An NFU spokesman said: “At this time it is not possible to say how much each grower may receive, as there is still a significant amount of work to be undertaken auditing the information before payments can be made.

“The NFU is also checking all the information related to the levy repayment to ensure it is made efficiently and accurately.

“Growers will be informed as soon as possible as to any monies owing. It is important that all growers and former growers fill in the forms and return them.

“I would urge those who did not receive a letter but think they should have to contact British Sugar as soon as possible.”

If you grew beet during this period and have not already been in touch with British Sugar you should look out for any letters, contact the helpline on 0870 240 2314 or email agriculture@britishsugar.com
