Poll: Are dairy farmers right to protest over milk prices?

Opinion remains divided over how much can be achieved by protesting against the recent fall in milk prices.

The NFU has blamed a slump in global commodity prices, oversupply of milk and the Russian trade embargo for the current milk crisis.

Union leaders have said protesting and picketing is not a good way to forge links between dairy farmers, milk processors and retailers.

The NFU has called for supermarkets to support dairy farmers by covering the deficit between the cost of production and the farmgate price.

However, farm lobby group Farmers For Action (FFA) has accused farming organisations, including the NFU, of not doing enough to support struggling dairy farmers.

FFA chief executive David Handley said the group and its supporters decided to launch strike action because nothing else worked to make processors and retailers understand the financial pain dairy farmers were suffering.
