New herbicide option for winter oat growers
The residual and contact-acting herbicide SumiMax has a new Extension of Authorisation for Minor Use (EAMU) in winter oats, giving growers a valuble new option in weed control.
Very few herbicides can be used in this increasingly popular crop, leaving growers with limited options for controlling problem weeds.
SumiMax contains flumioxazin and can be applied as a pre-emergence on all varieties of winter oats, according to UK distributor Interfarm UK. “It controls annual meadow grass and a range of broad-leaved weeds, including charlock, chickweed, cleavers, common field speedwell, common poppy, field pansy, fumitory, groundsel, ivy-leaved speedwell, mayweed and red deadnettle. In addition, it offers good levels of control in blackgrass and ryegrass,” says the firm.
Weed control is set to be more challenging this autumn as the late harvest delays drilling. “Oats themselves are not very competitive and so early removal of grass and broad-leaved weeds is advised.”
For any EAMU, growers should obtain a copy of approval via the Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD) website, ADAS offices or NFU. In the EAMU notice of approval, CRD points out that liability lies with the user and growers are advised to test a small area of crop prior to commercial use.
