World’s first carbon insetting programme established

The world’s first global carbon insetting programme, designed specifically to monetise environmental efforts within the agri-business supply chain, has been launched.

International regenerative agriculture certifier Regenagri established the platform with the aim of improving agri-supply chain sustainability.

The programme builds on the firms certification process, where farms undergo third-party audits to validate greenhouse gas emissions and carbon reduction data.

By the end of 2025, the insetting programme is expected to expand to reach 600,000ha (1.5m acres) of farmland, and generate more than 600.000 carbon insetting units, explains Franco Costantini, Regenagri CEO.

Carbon insetting refers to the reduction of carbon emissions within a specific supply chain, rather than the purchase of carbon credits from external sources.

“The insetting programme provides supply chain organisations with the opportunity to decarbonise their supply chains by purchasing carbon insetting units generated by the very farms they source from,” notes Franco.

“For those registered for the insetting programme, carbon insetting units will be issued based on the reduction in carbon footprint – offering the opportunity of an additional financial benefit to producers.”

An initial group of nine producer organisations across Brazil, Turkey, the US, Ivory Coast, Pakistan and India have joined the carbon insetting programme, turning regenerative practices across more than 350,000ha (871,827 acres) into additional financial returns.

All farms and supply chains with a current Regenagri certification are eligible to access the insetting programme. Find out more here
