VIDEO: Walkers crisps get even more British
Crisp manufacturer Walkers has announced the introduction of British-sourced flavours to its crisp range, building on its commitment to using 100% British potatoes.
The company has said 11 of its core flavours will now include ingredients grown or made on British farms.
Cheese and Onion flavour will now include premium cheddar cheese from Somerset, Ready Salted will have salt from Cheshire, while Prawn Cocktail will be flavoured by tomatoes grown in the Vale of Evesham.
For the first time Smoky Bacon will be made using real meat flavourings produced using Freedom Foods-approved British pork. Previously the crisps were produced using a flavouring suitable for vegetarians.
Sebastian Micozzi, head of marketing, said: “As a home-grown British brand, the move to using ingredients sourced from UK suppliers is a huge step for Walkers. We’ve spent two years making sure the new seasonings result in truly irresistible Walkers crisps which people know and love.”
Walkers announced its commitment to only use British potatoes back in 2007 and buys around 370,000t of potatoes each year.
To promote the new development the company has produced new packaging which prominently features a Union Jack potato stamp to reinforce provenance.
It is also running a high-profile marketing campaign including a TV advert starring long-term Walkers’ ambassador Gary Lineker.
