Farmers and land managers have until 30 April 2015 to get their applications in for a £10,000 water capital grant, part of the Countryside Stewardship scheme.

The grant can help farmers in a priority catchment target (download PDF) area with the cost of carrying out work to improve water quality on the farm.

LEAF Demonstration farmer, Nick Bragg of Frogmary Green Farm in Somerset, has used the grant to help fund a programme of work to deal with soil erosion and deal with run-off.

The grant went towards a novel technique – using sediment filter fencing – which has helped to reduce soil erosion on the farm significantly.

Natural England’s Catchment Sensitive farming officer, Roy Hayes, also explains how filter fences work and what they can do to help reduce the impact of soil erosion.
