Winter barley summary
Results are in from 18 Recommended List trial sites and the control varieties are currently averaging 9.36 t/ha, which is nearly 0.5t/ha below the five-year average (9.81 t/ha).
There is no clear pattern in the results, with high-yielding and low-yielding trials spread across the country, drilling dates and soil types. Although most of the high-yielding trials are in the North, the average of the controls in the Devon trial was high (10.47 t/ha).
Varieties
Pole position on 2021 treated yield is jointly held by the newly recommended six-row hybrid variety Thunderbolt along with Kingsbarn (both on 108%).
Control six-row hybrid Bazooka is at 107%, with six-row hybrids Kingston and Belmont on 106%. The six-row conventional feed variety Funky is at 103%.
The two-row feed varieties have been left somewhat behind in 2021. Tardis has performed well (105%), but the best of the rest, newly recommended variety Bolton, Surge and Creswell (North recommendation) are further behind on 102%. Newly recommend variety Bordeaux is on 101%.
Two-row malting varieties Electrum and Craft are as expected, in terms of yield, 97% and 95%, respectively.
